Lip Shaping & Symmetry
A well defined lip border, a noticeable cupid’s bow, or a balanced, symmetrical shape can all be achieved using lip fillers. Vertical Lip Lines
Also known as “smoker’s lines,” vertical lip lines around the border of the lips cause thinning over time. Some of our less robust fillers may be applied around the lips to smooth these lines without overfilling this delicate area.
How Lip Fillers Work
Forget the silicone and collagen injections of old; today’s fillers are all about hyaluronic acid (HA). The great thing about HA is that our own bodies produce this youthful ingredient for moisture. HA pulls water like a magnet before binding to it, providing youthful fullness. Because our bodies produce it naturally, the likelihood of having an adverse reaction to these fillers is lower than their silicone and collagen predecessors.
Facial trauma, aging, and other factors lead to an HA break down which occurs faster than our bodies are able to replenish. This leads to facial hollows, sagging skin, and thinning lips. When injected, HA gels, like lip fillers, provide immediate visible fullness. These results improve over time as the HA continues to draw moisture to the treatment area.
Juvederm and Restylane Lip Fillers
At Chesapeake Laser and Skin Care Center, we primarily carry two lines of FDA-approved dermal fillers: Juvederm and Restylane. Each of these collections offer fillers which were created for various facial applications, including the lips and around the nose and mouth.
Juvederm Lip Fillers
From the maker of BOTOX, Juvederm offers a full line of fillers for all of your facial contouring and anti-aging needs. Some fillers are versatile and can be used in the lips and facial folds, while others were designed specifically with the lips in mind.
Juvederm Ultra, for example, was designed for nasolabial folds and marionette lines; those are the folds which run from the corners of your nose to the corners of your mouth and down to your chin. However, for some patients who desire fuller lips, Juvederm Ultra is the perfect choice.
Juvederm Volbella, however, was designed specifically to provide subtle lip volume while smoothing the vertical lip lines we develop as we age. Your needs and goals will determine which filler is right for you.
Restylane Lip Fillers
Restylane developed the very first FDA-approved filler designed exclusively as a lip treatment. For patients who desire fuller lips and reduced vertical lip lines, Restylane Silk offered a smoother, softer approach not yet seen in any dermal filler on the market up to that point.
Now, Restylane has done it again with Restylane Kysse. Released and FDA-approved in 2020, Restylane Kysse offers the same natural-looking results but with more flexibility. This filler is unique in how it integrates with your tissue for a softer, smoother feel than previously developed dermal fillers.
Which Filler is Right For You?
When you visit our Kent Island medical spa, we will see you for a consultation. During this first appointment, we will discuss your concerns and goals, examine the treatment area, and go over your medical history. All of these steps help us determine which procedures will provide you with safe, beautiful outcomes. Once we have determined which lip filler is right for you, we can proceed with treatment.
What to Expect During Your Lip Injection Treatment
Prior to your appointment, we will provide you with instructions to prepare. These will include some dos and don’ts to ensure your treatment and results are the best they can be. We will perform your lip injections in one of our comfortable treatment rooms inside of our Kent Island medical spa.
After cleansing the area, we may apply topical numbing or ice for your comfort. Each filler contains injectable lidocaine, a local anesthetic, but some patients request additional numbing. Using a very fine needle, we will inject the filler of choice into the treatment area while shaping and guiding the HA gel into place. The majority of patients describe this as a tolerable pinching sensation. Following application, we will also use ice to manage swelling and promote rapid healing.
When you leave our office, you will be provided with a follow-up appointment date and time as well as post-care instructions. At your follow-up appointment, we will evaluate your results and, if necessary, apply more product to finish your new look.
