Botox Treatments:
When Should You Start?

Many people get Botox treatment after they’ve developed crow’s feet. However, you can prevent expression lines before they become visibly apparent. Once you start noticing crow’s feet and marionette lines – which can etch more deeply into your face with an advancement in age – you should consider getting Botox.

Are You Ready for Botox?

Botox is widely regarded as the most effective wrinkle treatment on the market. Here are some signs that you may be ready for this aesthetic solution.

You’re bothered by fine lines and wrinkles on your face. In this case, the sooner you opt for Botox, the better it is as far as results are concerned. As you age, your facial skin starts thinning which leads to wrinkles, making neuromodulators a safe, non-invasive method for treating deep-set expression lines.

You’ve begun noticing crow’s feet and marionette lines. Ideally, you should get Botox around the time these lines and wrinkles begin to appear. A preventative approach – opting in when the wrinkles are just starting to develop – can delay the appearance of deep and pronounced lines.

You have moderate to severe expression lines. Have you noticed deep wrinkles when you make facial expressions? Getting Botox at the onset of such lines may erase the creases completely, and even prevent static wrinkles from forming.

Everyone Ages Differently

Genes play an important role in determining your propensity for wrinkles, including the types of fine lines your face is likely to develop with age. For instance, you may be predisposed to developing wrinkles early, due to genetic factors inherited from your parents. Or perhaps a predisposition for marionette lines runs in one side of the family.

Also, factor in your lifestyle habits. If your profession or hobbies require you to spend a long time in the sun or expose you to a fair bit of air pollution, your skin may get drier and prematurely wrinkled.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Botox work?

Botox is a neuromodulator, a wrinkle-relaxing injectable drug. It is a botulinum toxin type A preparation used to block nerve activity in muscles. Before Botox began to be used cosmetically, it was used to treat spasms in neck muscles and muscle stiffness in the legs, toes, elbows and fingers. As a wrinkle treatment, Botox has been spectacularly successful, as evidenced in the millions of Botox treatments carried out annually.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

The cost of Botox treatment depends on the number of injections, the size of the treatment area, and the city where you receive treatment. Note that Botox is priced per unit. The average cost of each unit comes in $10-$15. So, if you’re receiving 15 injections, expect to pay $150-$225 for each session.

How Often Should I get Botox?

As results from Botox last three to six months, you should book a session every three to six months. Those who get repeated Botox injections over time are able to go longer – up to six months or more – between treatments. If you want to make your aging cycle run slower, you need a plan that includes Botox and other treatments, and schedule downtime accordingly.

How Long Does it Take for Results to Show?

It may take 2-8 days to see initial results. Most patients see the maximum results from Botox about 14 days after treatment.

Is Botox Permanent?

The effects of Botox injections are not permanent. Results last anywhere from three months to up to six months for some patients. Re-injections are recommended while there is still some Botox in your muscles. That way your facial muscles will learn to get into a relaxed mode.

Is Botox Painful?

Botox is a relatively painless treatment. You may experience mild discomfort during the injections. The discomfort is brief and does not persist long after the procedure.

What are the Side-Effects of Botox?

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery deems Botox safe. As with any medical or cosmetic treatment, there are some temporary side-effects. They can include redness or swelling, and in some cases minor bruising. Botox also has some of the following benefits:

  • It is FDA-approved
  • Non-surgical and non-invasive
  • It can produce a visible difference in facial youthfulness
  • Lightens various types of lines and wrinkles
  • It has zero to minimal downtime
  • Results show quickly
  • Treatment takes less than 10 minutes
