Appearance: Small blemishes that have whitish ‘heads.’ They might be filled with pus.
Whiteheads develop when hair follicles are clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Whiteheads are often seen in people with oily skin. They prevent the pores from opening.
Appearance: Small, black dots on the skin.
Blackheads are caused by hair follicles that are clogged with dead skin or oil. Unlike whiteheads that cause pores to stay closed, blackheads are open on the surface of the skin, even though the pores are clogged. The black color associated with blackheads is due to the pore’s exposure to oxygen.
Appearance: Raised lesions that are pink or red, and are hard.
Whiteheads that progress into the next stage are known as papules. They are infected and inflamed comedones. They are hard, sensitive to touch, and leave the skin pink or red in appearance. Papules form due to dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria just under the surface of the skin.
Appearance: Raised areas that contain yellow or white pus, with a predominant red ring surrounding the pus. They are visible on the skin and are commonly mistaken for whiteheads.
Untreated whiteheads become pustules. While they are similar to papules, they are filled with pus. Pustules are painful, and tender to touch.
Appearance: Blemishes that last for months and have a tendency to spread, often very rapidly. There are many types of acne that can fall into this category. Some of these include:
Nodules – large, bumps that are firm to touch. They are painful and develop deep within the skin. They develop when infected or clogged pores endure further infection and irritation.
Cysts – Pus-filled lesions that resemble boils. They are formed from a severe infection and are likely to leave scars.
Acne Conglobata – An inflammatory disease of several inflamed nodules. This condition often occurs between the ages of 18 and 30. They can occur on the back, chest, neck, buttocks, and arms.
